Colmar, France

The next weekend , December 12, we drove an hour and a half to Colmar, France. A small town on the French boarder. Here the whole down town was turned into a giant Christmas markt. Every window seemed to be decorated with garland and ornaments and lights. Stalls lined every street selling food, gifts, new inventions, toys, or hand made items. Aubrie sent her Christmas wish list to Santa Claus at his personal mail box in the kinder markt and both loved riding the old fashioned wooden horse carousal-type ride. We happened across a museum that was the birth place of Auguste Bartholdi the man who created the Statue of Liberty. We found this unexpected American history fascinating. There was other versions of the Statue of Liberty on display as the artist tried to come up with the best idea. His other enormous monuments were also documented with bits and pieces to observe. The girls stayed very interested and we were all glad for the chance to warm up. As the evening went on the streets became even more crowded and less magical. We ducked into a pizza restaurant and did our best to order a meal with a waitress who spoke not a word of English or German. There was a lot of charades involved as she tried to explain which French words were cow and pig, quite funny really. I was surprised that the 2 years of French I had in Junior High actually helped when I remembered how to count to 5. It was a very cultural experience. We found out after that Ted's uncle lost his leg in Colmar during the second world war. Ted's Dad got a kick out the fact that we were there. His memory of his brothers experience was as vivid as if he had been there himself.

ok so you have to turn you head sideways to watch this!
