Over our Christmas vacation we visited neighboring towns that were easily reached by car. The first was Luneburg. This was the first time I had been inside such an old and historic church. Luneburg was once a very rich city due to its salt deposits which it exported mostly to Scandinavia. Salt was needed for food preservation and at least a thousand years ago it was more valuable than gold. We thought it was fascinating to see some of the old building cracking a little due to the salt mines below the town. We saw St. Michael's Church where Johann Sebastian Bach sang as a choir boy. Bach more than likely played at all of the three churches that are with in a few block of each other. Many streets are named after this great composer.
