Oberland/ Trummelbach Falls

The weekend of Sept 20, 2010, we headed to Switzerland's Oberland region near Interlanken with the goal of seeing Trummelbach Falls.  It was a 3 hour drive from our home so we decided to stay a night at the Jungfrau camp site inside a little bungalow, in the city of Lauterbrunnen.  This place was awesome and just below a huge and highly picturesque waterfall.  We ate at a traditional Swiss restaurant and tried Rosti for the first time (similar to American hash-browns but served at dinner time with sausages or steaks or what-not)

The next day we headed up the canyon a bit to see the Trummelbach Falls. These series of 10 waterfalls can only be seen inside the cave like walls of the mountain/canyon.  There is a funicular (train type thing) that took us half way up then we meandered our way around the illuminated falls.  Not many pictures turned out but hopefully these 2 movies will give you an idea of how unique these falls are.

After seeing the falls we headed to Grindelwald where we came upon a Alps festival complete with horn blowers, and lots of alpine cheese to taste.  There were also animals to pet and this pretend cow to milk.  This picture below is showing huge cow bells as a display for the festival. Swiss cows really do where bells here.

We went on a walk around Grindelwald and enjoyed being among the huge Swiss Alp mountains and rolling green hills.

 

All around Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald there were people paragliding off the mountain walls.  


Here is a picture of what I assume to be the Lower Grindelwald Glacier.  You can clearly see the how it is receding.  I wonder what it will look like 10 or 20 years from now.

We had a great weekend and I can't wait to get back to the Oberland area again as 2 days just brushed the surface of what the area has to offer!
